Love's Safety

Rumpelteazer lay in the wicker basket with Mungojerrie. Unlike her companion, she hadn’t fallen asleep. For some reason she was unable to easily fall into sleep which was funny since it was always the opposite for the two calicos. Mungojerrie would be the one who could never get to sleep; He would stay up for hours until he finally got hold of his thoughts and put his eyes to rest. Then this act would usually result in Rumpel trying to wake him up late in the morning. To Rumpelteazer, this was a very difficult and annoying task.

She rolled over to watch the moonlit drops of rain hit the window, making a gentle pitter patter. Then the room lit up with a flash that was soon followed by a loud crack. Rumpel gave a jump and snuggled up closer to Mungojerrie.

“Tha’ loigh’nin in’dn gunna dew eniefin’ tew ya, luv.” Came a tired voice from just above the young queen’s ear.

Rumpel turned around and found Mungo’s brown eyes looking back at her. The soft light from the window cast a glow across his already shinning eyes. Rumpelteazer smiled. Those were the eyes that made her loose all her troubles when she was bothered. The eyes that made her feel what Mungo felt. Those were the very same eyes that made her feel a sense of security and comfort when she was scared or in danger. That was what she saw at that moment when her eyes fell upon his. Security and comfort.

“I know.” Rumpel said with a small smile, “I was just...startled.”

“Uh-huh.” Mungo chuckled raising an eyebrow, “Jus’ lyoike w’en ya geit sta’tl’d woiyil woahchin’ uh scahry muvie. Roooooigh’.”

Rumpel opened up her mouth to protest but the room was once more filled with a light and then a loud boom. Rumpel jumped again and landed partially on Mungo. A guilty smile crept across her lips and she let out a small giggle.

Mungo rolled his eyes. “Stell sta’tl’d?”

Rumpel gave him a playful swipe on his ear. “Oh alright. So I was a little freaked? It’s not like I jumped up and raced out of the room screaming.”

“Oi’m glahd ya dedn’. Oi’d lyoike ta keeip moiy ea’drums, dank yew vedy muoch.” Mungo stretched out his arms and took a big yawn, “Ya knowe...effen yer nowt gunna dew eniefin’ woile yer layin’ oawn mie lyoike dat, culdja geit oaff?”

Rumpel smiled and shifted so she was fully on top of him. “Better?”

Mungo just stared at her.

“Oh, alright. But who said I wasn’t going to do anything?” She giggled.

“Hmmmm...Oi dun’no...w’otcha gunna dew?” Mungo said in a lowered voice. His mouth curved into famous crooked grin.

“I dunno. What do you want me to do?” Rumpel asked in the same hushed voice as she leaned her head down closer to his.

“G’ess.” Mungo said even quieter, his grin growing by the second.

Rumpel smiled and slowly let her lips meet for a kiss. Ending the kiss a little shorter than intended, she looked up at him hoping he’d be the next to speak.

“Guud g’ess.” Mungo chuckled.

Thunder broke the moment, however, Rumpel did not jump.

“Yew dedn’ geit sca’d dees toime.” Mungo said.

Rumpel smiled ever so slightly and laid her head on his chest. She listened to his heartbeat, which was slowly drowned out by his rhythmic purring. Her smile grew wider. “I didn’t need to. I feel safe now.”
